Sexual Intimacy

In today’s world sex is just another plaything. Sex is viewed as this laughable, open, and dirty thing. It’s portrayed as a selfish act, one in which the participants are completely and utterly satisfied 100% of the time (not to mention that satisfaction comes quickly and easily which is far from reality). So if the views are so skewed and distorted from reality, WHY are movies, TV shows, and other media networks providing such false information? I believe it’s because that is what sells, people are curious about it and want to be informed, it’s a scheme from the Adversary to produce unrealistic expectations, and why wouldn’t the Adversary want what’s completely sacred to be posted, plastered, and prodded?

To begin, sexual media is what sells. People of the world are craving intimacy (which is perfectly normal and natural…after all, that’s how our bodies are built), but they are looking for it in all the wrong ways. The best way to seek sexual intimacy is to 1) wait for marriage, and 2) express sexual intimacy within marriage. But nobody wants to wait! This can make things very difficult, especially when one is curious about sex.

Ever hear the saying, “Curiosity killed the cat?” That is evermore true today. With the media and people being more open as a society about everything, more and more people are becoming curious about sex. I believe this is why pornography has become such a big issue. Here you have ten or eleven year old kids who hear about sex from school, their parents haven’t educated them, and they want to learn more about it, so they turn to Dr. Google which is a HUGE mistake. Many kids don’t even know what pornography is, let alone the detail of sex, and they don’t know that pornography is extremely addicting. Next thing you know we have kids that are becoming involved in pornography and becoming addicted simply because they were curious.

Additionally, the media is promoting sex as a scheme from the Adversary to produce unrealistic expectations. Men and women are not the same, even though they are being portrayed that way. There are so many differences between men and women. In sex, women usually climax way later than men do. And what is the media doing? They are portraying that a woman climaxes at the same time as men do. This is creating unrealistic expectations for men.

Another way the media is creating unrealistic expectations is by showing sacred parts of the body to the world. Often, but not always, pornography actors and actresses have more “ideal” body types and sizes. How could that NOT distort reality?!

Lastly, another way the media is creating unrealistic expectations is by not considering Oxytocin, the hormone that women produce when they have sex. This hormone is known as the “attachment” hormone. When women have sex, give birth, or even breastfeed their baby they release this hormone. This hormone is important in sex because it allows that woman to feel attached to that man. In movies and other media, the idea of attachment isn’t even considered after having sex.

In conclusion, the Adversary wants what’s sacred to be posted, plastered, and prodded. As we learn in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sexual intimacy is very, very sacred and special. Satan doesn’t want that to be sacred. He wants it plastered across the news with the biggest, most appalling headlines attached. Why would he do that? Because he doesn’t want us to be happy.

In today’s world, not very many people are genuinely happy. So what can we do about that? We can educate others! We can educate our kids about sexual intimacy with age appropriate information, we can share church articles with friends about the sanctity of marriage and the happiness that comes with fulfilling sexual purity, and we can pray to be strengthened against the adversary today. What will you do to combat the false information the media portrays?
